Three years ago, Hayes formed. And despite a revolving
cast of musicians, the band is now firmly planted and
ready to start turning heads, if they haven't already.
It
started off with Aaron Smart, a singer/guitarist and
drummer, along with Sean Wilson on bass, and Jason Johnson,
a former member of Palo Alto and guitarist who toured
with Pete Yorn. There were others, coming and going.
Some initial buzz was in the cards, but "it wasn't
quite right," says Smart.
Johnson went on to tour with Yorn for two years, and
Jason Goodhue, Palo Alto's bass guitarist came on board.
Jesse Kramer, an Aerosmith musician's son, came in to
do some recording and playing, but split from the group
after a year, notably, on good terms.
Then came Kelly Finnigan, a friend of Kramers. He is
now a permanent member and is now finishing the upcoming
album along with Gavin Mackillop (Sugarcult, Toad the
Wet Sprocket, Goo Goo Dolls.) He's given the songs their
vintage vibe, Smart says. Drew Herche is the final piece
to come into the puzzle on the drumkit, while Johnson
returned and still plays with the band.
Now, onto the music.
"Asinamaha" has a harder rock sound, but nevertheless
sounds beautifully professional, while "Royal Flush"
takes us to melodic Radiohead-like acoustic roots as
Smart sings, "I've been losing my head again/Dropped
dreams and I can't seem to walk on my own." "Necktie"
is Smart's second favorite song to "Asinamaha."
Although the members of Hayes don't compare their sound
to anyone else's a lot of people do.
"Some say Radiohead meets Stone Temple Pilots meets
Toad the Wet sprocket meets Swervedriver meets Smashing
Pumpkins," Smart says. "That's fine with us."
He said many of the songs sort of wrote themselves
and were very "organic." The band owns a small
studio in Hollywood, Regime Studios (http://www.regimestudios.com).
Phantom Planet, Pete Yorn, Chris Goss and many notable
others have recently recorded there.
Currently, Hayes is playing in California, but hopes
to get on a national tour sometime soon. Their songs
are already hitting XM and some satellite radio stations
in London.
Here at DiscoveringArtists.com, we're pleased to feature
