Australian-native Kai Brown is getting noticed
for his smooth acoustic hooks. Read on to learn more
about what songwriting means to this California-based
singer-songwriter.
Twenty-seven
year old singer-songwriter Kai Brown did the right thing
relocating to California from his native Sydney, Australia.
Brown's debut album Better Now is taking off
with fans on the West Coast and slowly starting to trickle
throughout the US.
His sound is acoustic rock backed with smooth vocals
reminiscent of Tom Petty, whom he sites as one of his
greatest musical influences.
Brown has writer/producer Cary Pierce to thank for
taking him under his wing during the making of this
album. "You know, working with Cary was like being
in songwriting boot camp. It was a great experience.
He has such a great ear for melody and he really pushed
me to think about that when we were writing."
Sitting down to record with members of the band Vertical
Horizon on his album was an incredible experience that
Brown will never forget. "That was a real trip.
I've been a fan of Vertical Horizon songs for many years.
When Cary said they would be playing on the album, I
could hardly believe it. Sean, Ed and George are all
the nicest guys. They really are true professionals.
They are so relaxed in the studio, which was really
nice. I was very lucky to get to work with those guys."
His hard work with Pierce definitely paid off with
poignant lyrics such as these from his song "The
Pain": "Ya know I've been searchin' what I
already know/But sometimes we give in to what lies below/Invested
all my time in worldly things/Mislead misfortune is
what it brings."
When asked about his song writing process, he replied,
"Sometimes I feel it's best for people to use their
own imagination and set their own stories to songs.
I try to allow that. I'll tell you something that I
haven't told anyone else... "Always" is about
my grandmother. That's about a person and a memory and
based on truth. I always seem to have a personal connection
to the lyrics I write. I think it helps convey a more
honest message if I can relate to it myself, but one
has to be open to creativity and fiction to be a writer,
too."
What does Brown want you to know about him? "I
always try and give my all in everything I do. I feel
very humbled and blessed to be given this gift and I
just want to make the most of it. My music comes from
my heart. I really want to make a career out of relating
to people of all ages and all walks of life. I believe
music is made to bring people together."
If you're lucky enough to live in California, you
have a good chance of catching this rising star in your
area throughout this month and next. He'll also be making
a few stops in Texas and Idaho, and his manager says
plans for a college tour are in the works.
