We last heard from her with the release of her album,
Alice Peacock. Now, Alice Peaock tells us about
her latest release Who I am and her advocacy
mission.
Tell us about your new album. Who helped you with
it and how does it differ from your last full-length
release?
Andrew Williams produced this record and assembled
an incredible group of musicians to play on it...kind
of like a great film director! Curt Schneider played
bass, engineered the whole thing AND mixed. Jay Bellerose
played drums/percussion, Danny Howes played guitar and
Andrew played guitar as well. I was primarily on piano
although I played guitar on two songs, "Love"
and "Here I Go Again".
I think this album differs from my last record in that
I feel I've finally found my creative voice...there's
more of a musical thread throughout this album that
ties it all together than the last one.
Yes, this album has a fresh sound. So what is your
favorite song on the new album?
I can't possibly pick a favorite song...it's like telling
a mother to pick her favorite child :-) I do think,
however, that "Time" is one of the best songs
I've written. If I have to pick one that'd be it.
What were some of the challenges in songwriting
and producing this album?
I think the pressure was off with this record –
I felt like it was in good hands with Andrew producing
and I wasn't trying to make a "big pop record"
only serve the music in the purest way possible. It
was a relatively stress-free process!
So how have you evolved since your last release?
I think I've evolved as a songwriter and certainly
grown as a human being which infuses my writing.
What is in the works for the next few months? Are
you hitting the East Coast at all or will it just be
Midwest?
I did a string of dates out East in August (Harrisburg,
PA, Philly, Virginia Beach, Annapolis, Northampton MA,
Boston and NYC). I know I'll be back out there in the
Fall as well. There's lots of radio station visits and
touring planned into the next several months.
Cool. I see you’re playing with Heart and
Stephen Kellogg the Sixers. An eclectic mix! Aside from
your music, tell us a little about your ongoing charity
(reading promotion, etc.) work.
Rock For Reading is an Illinois based not for profit
that I founded three years ago. Our mission is to spotlight
literacy and the importance of literacy through high-profile
music concerts and events. If we can get like-minded
musicians talking about why it's important to read and
what books have inspired them personally maybe we can
cut through all the other noise and distractions that
are thrown at us in this modern time.
Statistics have shown that one out of five Americans
is considered "functionally illiterate" which
means they're not reading above the 3rd grade level.
That's pretty scary to me; also, a non reading society
tends not to be involved in their community; they don't
vote, support the arts etc. I feel that this is a wake
up call to us and I want to do my part to help those
that can't read
and get them the resources they need as well as help
encourage a culture of reading.
