She just released her live DVD, which we adored.
Now we talk to Charlotte Martin about taping live and
upcoming albums.
We loved your DVD. How was taping that? Any plans
for more live work? How has the response to it been?
The taping was amazing. It actually turned into part documentary, part show, part behind the scenes footage from recording...The response has been really wonderful. This DVD is for the fans and the people that understand my music, as well as the people that are just being introduced to it. If you have not had the opportunity to come be with us at a live show, this is a great entrée. We wanted to make it for all the people that want to take the show home with them, as well as for the people in other parts of the world where I have not been able to tour.
What's next for you? Do you have another album coming out soon? How do you think it will be different?
Stromata. Coming out in the Fall of 2006 it looks like. I don't really know how to describe it in just a few sentences...to sum it up, maybe I should drop a blowdryer into a bath tub filled with blue water and see some sparks. Technically, it's more experimental for me. I still want you to be sucked in and have it relate to your own spirit and faith and lovewalks...but they might have a bit of electroshock therapy on the listening of this upcoming album.
That sounds interesting! So you were on a major label (RCA) and now you're on a smaller label. Tell us what's up.
My husband, brother, and my two managers started a label called Dinosaur Fight Records which is being distributed through a major. It's interesting. I have been signed directly to indies and majors and now to have my own is different. My close friends are my managers, my publicists are girls I've worked with for years and years. It's a family situation and it's so much fun working with people I am so close with. It's really what I always wanted. And yes I am reaching more people now than I did on RCA. RCA really did help promote me on the road by keeping me touring...but after I left, I just kept touring and touring. We just wrapped up our 4th tour in 6 months.
What have you been up to when you're not on the road?
My car broke down on the 110 freeway today. I have to go get new glasses. My house needs new floors cause my puppies peed everywhere while Ken came to visit at SXSW. I need to get my teeth cleaned...and oh yes, I am going to be shooting photos this weekend with my long time collaborator Erin Russell, for the album.
We are rolling now...lots of work to be done. Must finish everything on Stromata. It's getting to be very exciting right now. And I am anxious to get back on the road (I have been home 4 days). But I love seeing my husband Ken, and my puppies.
That's good—nice to take a break, I'm sure.
So who are you currently listening to? Any bands you
think deserve more recognition?
Dead Can Dance, Peter Gabriel, Sigur Ros, Sufjan Stevens, Murder By Death, Enigma, Slowdive... They all should win Grammys!!!
Yeah sometimes the best music doesn't hit the mainstream. We like it that way. Hey good luck to you and we'll be in touch regarding your new album!
Thank you for the interview and the questions.
