It was our first time seeing the Mraz man live. A great
show despite the fact that we were outside on the patio
looking through the entrance and couldn't hear
too well. But it didn't matter – Mraz rules.
He opened with "The Remedy". Since he's
said it's his least favorite song to perform,
Dan and I agreed that he did it to please the one-hit
wonder groupies and then engulfed himself into the rest
of the performance.
No need to discuss the songs since they're well-known
already but let's elaborate on the way he performed.
I'm big into trying to analyze the performers.
I think he was pleased to see the place sold out for
him. He sang with heart and passion, and threw in some
goodies besides the regular "Rocket" tracks.
Mraz played "Unfold", a personal fave of
mine. Many fans were taken back by a "disco"
version of "Sleep All Day." Love the song
slow, and loved it with a beat. It's kinda cool that
he can transverse genres, and hearing it live made it
all the more great. He ended with a solo version of
"You and I Both", which was totally sweet.
Like how he toned that one down. Mraz is definitely
an artist you see live and don't just feel like he's
"playing the CD" for you. A plus, if you ask
me.
After Mraz exited stage left, we were stoked for Maroon
5 to go on. We'd seen them this fall with John Mayer,
but weren't really into their music until after the
show.
Maroon 5 took the stage on fire lighting up with "This
Love". From there, the energy increased with "The
Sun" and "She Will be Loved" to name
a few. Lead singer Adam Levine was pumped to hear the
near-packed room roaring with fans, signaling the bands
escalating popularity. They threw in a new song, which
we are not sure of the name, but are sure to love it
once we hear it on their next album. Mraz made an appearance
up on stage for the last song, but we missed it because
we were outside waiting to meet him.
We met Toca – a fellow NJ native – which
rocked. His repor with the crowd was professional and
friendly. I left 10 minutes before Mraz came out and
signed Dan's CD. So Dan the Man got lucky –
well, sorta – though we still wish we had time
to actually talk to Mraz, much like the hundreds of
others there.
Overall, we had a kick-ass time. Maroon's performance
was electrifying – better for Dan and I this time
because we knew the songs and had a better appreciation
for the energizing group. The 5-man band made a cameo
on our way out and stopped to greet a few fans.
And Mraz was phenomenal. But we already knew he would
be the second we bought our tickets. Mraz never disappoints.
