Missed Connections, Dazzling Photos::An
Evening with Matt/Howie/OAR
I'm not sure if I'm writing a show review here, or
just a sob story. Honestly!
Dan and I ventured to PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel,
NJ for the Matt Nathanson/Howie Day/OAR show only to
miss Matt's opening act, spend Howie's set talking to
Matt and occupying our OAR time with tons of fabulous
photos. All summer I've waited to see Nathanson play
on the big stage, and we missed it. So sorry kids, no
pics.
It
was my first time seeing Day live, and I really enjoyed
his performance. Aside from a fuzzy mic in his opening
track "Brace Yourself", I was delighted to
see the Maine native live. Although I've heard his solo
days were better, the full band rocked out during an
onslaught of tracks from Australia and Stop All the
World Now. A swirling mix of electric guitars gave "Perfect
Time of Day" the a spot-on live touch.
As Day played on, and even took to the piano, Dan and
I sorted through a mass of Matty-Nay-crazed fans snapping
photos and swooning at the San Francisco acoustic rocker.
We said our hellos, apologizing for missing his big
stage debut in Jersey. (We did hear "Sing Me Sweet",
"Pretty the World", "Bare" and more
while waiting outside the stadium — and they sounded
good!)
The evening ended up with us watching OAR take the
stage, and I felt the same energy that I did back in
'95 when I was in high school, a big fan of Dave Matthews
Band. Even though I can't get into their sound, I did
enjoy the radio hit, "Hey Girl," and was amazed
by the following this band has attracted.
Let me say this - they are good at their musical genre;
a band that gets on well musically with spectacular
lead vocals and fun lyrics to match.
All in all, it was a great evening of missed opportunities
and great acoustic music, but I think I'll show up early
next time.
The best thing — check out our photos. Those
puppies are courtesy of a fantabulous photo press pass
and my new Canon.
