I felt myself slip back into 1996 when Alanis took
the stage. The goddesss of my high school senior year
was before me again, and it seems as though we picked
up right where we left off.
She went on at PNC Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ on July
17th, right after her native country buddies, Barenaked
Ladies. And after a whimsical set by the 5 rockers,
it was time for the gal to step out and take over the
show. Which, I might add, she surely did.
We sang "You Oughta Know" together -- me
reliving my teenage angst, and her in a softer light
yet still emotional.
"Not the Doctor" went acoustic and the
Canadian princess got it spot on. She played famous
hits such as, "One Hand in My Pocket" and
"You Learn." But she captured the audience
most with a hauntingly magical version of "Uninvited".
Until I watched her play through tons of songs spanning
her successful career, I never realized how many hits
she's had. "Thank U." "Ironic."
"Hands Clean." "Head Over Feet."
The list seemed endless.
She also played a few lesser-known songs such as "Are
You Still Mad," a ballad in which her voice resonates
purely.
Alanis featured her new song, "Everything",
which is a sweet song with meaningful lyrics. I felt
a little welled up when she sang it, to be honest.
She's certainly softened her image, which to me reflects
her maturity rather than a stunt to sell more records.
Most definitely, she's worth seeing live because of
her exquisite voice, gripping lyrics, and hearty ability
to rock out.
It was clear to me, after watching the show, that these
once-faded Lilithy chicks will never really subside.
Their music gets refined, better. And when you can catch
them live, you should.
