With all the makings of a folk rock legend, Josh Ritter
keeps turning heads. And this month, heads will be turning
right here in at the Jersey Shore.
Compared often to Bob Dylan, Nick Drake, Pete Yorn
and Leonard Cohen, this 27-year-old Idaho native has
a style all his own. His latest release, "Hello
Starling", is sure to one day be a classic because
it features Ritter's simple yet mysteriously poetic
lyrics and his rich, signature vocals.
Ritter's career took flight in Ireland, and his songs
soon entered the Irish Top 40, which helped him gain
full-blown cult status there, performing with artists
such as Liz Phair, Beth Orton, Joan Baez and Damien
Rice. Considered Irish, stardom originated overseas
for the Dylanesque prodigy at the age of 23.
Now from Boston, Ritter is busy on a whirlwind tour
and will travel over to the United Kingdom this winter.
But before he treks back across the Atlantic Ocean,
he's making a stop at The Saint in Asbury Park...and
the show promises to be packed with his intense acoustic-driven
songs.
But don't expect a completely mellow evening. Ritter
knows how to take things up a notch and rock out a crowd.
His predominantly rainy day tunes can go from somber
to startling as he picks up the tempo.
In a time when classic folk rock artists seem to be
making a comeback, it's refreshing to see how Ritter
fits into the mix. He proves that eloquent, mature music
is still in the souls of Generation X, lurking until
an anti-pop wonder comes along.
Ritter will be playing on Tuesday, at The Saint in
Asbury Park. Tickets are $10 and they will be going
fast, so place your advanced order at www.thesaintnj.com
or try to slip in at the door.
